Hot Dogs for Jesus

It’s been a busy month for In His Steps: opening the Kairos Training Center, children in our programs starting the new school year, visitors passing through, and much more. With all the busyness, we thought it would be fun to have a party for local kids and share some hot dogs with them!

After sending word to the neighborhood that all children were invited for lunch on Wednesday, we wondered whether the recent holiday of Pchum Ben might negatively affect attendance. We needn’t have worried: an hour before the program started, our Center was already inundated with kids flocking in from the surrounding area!

Our staff and a great team of volunteers and Father’s House kids pitched in to prepare trays full of food and pass everything out. Over 220 children came, and after a short lesson from staff, received hot dogs, drinks, and snacks. The air was filled with a happy commotion as they and their friends enjoyed their hot dogs, a first for many!

We love kids: they are the future of Cambodia and a blessing from God. Please join us in praying for the children of Saang district, that they would grow to know Him through the small and seemingly simple acts of love that He has called us to.

Kairos Training Center Debut

When Eric and Ginny Hanson first began In His Steps International, they felt led to focus on the Saang District of Cambodia. They wanted to influence this community in a deep, life-changing, empowering way and one way they chose to so was through teaching English. Over time, that choice grew and developed into children’s programs, youth services, a church plant, leadership training and more.

This past weekend marked both the fulfillment and the embarkation of a long-awaited vision — a center which would offer multiple avenues for training and equipping children, teenagers, young adults and the elders of the community. Construction of the building started in January 2012 but the foundation was laid years ago in a one-room building crammed full of the poorest of the poor, eager to learn.

We hope you will enjoy this video about the Kairos Training Center.

Also, we are pleased to announce the debut of our new website. We hope you will take time to look around. Engage with the ministries, see where In His Steps began and what God has done over the years, peruse the pictures and more. Enjoy!

Blessing Children

"It is more blessed to give than to receive."

Acts 20:35

Last week a huge shipment arrived on our doorstep – over 600 book bags, t-shirts, hats, and water bottles! A Singaporean friend from a recent team had contacted us and asked if she could send some gifts for children in Saang, and of course we said yes. It was exciting to open the boxes and see so many colorful items to share in the community.

At our Saturday children’s program alone, we were able to bless nearly 200 children! This donation was perfect timing since many in Saang are gearing up for the new school year, which starts in October. Father’s House children enjoyed receiving their new gifts as well, and began using them right away!

We love when God connects us to people that want to sow into Cambodia, whether it be through prayer, service on outreach, financial support, or donations such as the one we received last week. If you’d like to get involved in how God is using In His Steps in Cambodia, click here to learn more!

New Wheels

Driving a motorcycle isn’t just for thrill-seekers or daredevils: here in Cambodia it’s an important life skill! Cars are growing in popularity, but for most Cambodians a moto is their main form of transportation. We require all our interns to learn how to drive a moto, not only for convenience but also as a way to acclimate into the culture and lifestyle of those around them.

Rhiannon, our intern from Canada, just got her own moto after daily practice with staff members SreyMom and Aly. This is an important step of independence for her as she goes about daily ministry teaching English, spending time in Fathers’ House, helping in Sak Saum, and doing children’s ministry. Check out Rhiannon’s new wheels below!

Teamwork - A Photo Update

Each year, we host teams from the US and other countries for short-term outreaches. Having teams is both challenging and energizing: it’s extra work for all of us, but often brings a breath of fresh air into the labor of love that we are busy with year-round!

These past few months have been packed with several teams visiting in quick succession. Multiple groups from Colorado Hong Kong, and Singapore all came with different backgrounds and skills but one shared goal: to bless Cambodians and share God’s love. They did everything from teaching English and preaching in church to helping with youth programs and taking children on a trip to the zoo!
